When Kaylei, a senior from Cardinal Gibbons High School's Class of 2025, told me she wanted to do her senior session in Charleston, I might have done a little happy dance. There's something about that vibrant city that just gets my creative energy going—honestly, you can't turn a corner without finding something beautiful to shoot. We spent a gorgeous summer day exploring historic downtown with multiple outfit changes, then woke up before the sun the next morning for a magical sunrise session at Folly Beach. And let me tell you, it was worth every single early alarm.
The Power of Multiple Outfits (And Why You Should Plan for Them!)
Here's something I always tell my seniors: variety is your best friend. Kaylei brought six total looks between downtown and the beach, and it completely transformed her gallery. Instead of dozens of photos that all look the same, she walked away with images that felt like completely different sessions. My biggest tip? Think about your locations when you're planning outfits. Kaylei showed up in a pink eyelet two-piece set with white boots, and the whole vibe was fresh, feminine, and absolutely perfect against those candy-colored facades. Kaylei's soft pink echoed the pastel tones of the houses without matching them exactly—that's the sweet spot. Monochromatic AND COLOR THEORY Magic in Yellow
This might have been my favorite look of the day. We found this gorgeous yellow house and Kaylei changed into a yellow bodysuit with white jeans and heels. The monochromatic moment? Chef's kiss. When your outfit intentionally plays off your background, it creates this cohesive, editorial feel that's just so satisfying.
There's no corner in downtown Charleston that doesn't excite me with possibility and creativity, and this is exactly what I mean. We turned one corner and boom—the perfect backdrop was just waiting for us. That's the magic of this city.

Casual Cool on the Cobblestones
For our third downtown look, we headed to some cobblestone streets and waterfront areas, and Kaylei switched into a blue shorts romper with booties. This outfit was perfect for the more relaxed, wandering-around-the-city vibe. The shorts kept things comfortable in the summer heat (important!), and the booties added just enough polish to keep it photo-ready.
After wrapping up downtown, we grabbed food at Taco Boy, and let me tell you—it was the perfect end to day one. I'm kind of a foodie, so great food after a full day of shooting is non-negotiable!
Outfit Tip: Your senior session should span different vibes—think dressy, casual, and somewhere in between. A romper or jumpsuit is perfect for that middle ground. It's put-together enough for photos but comfortable enough that you're not fidgeting with your outfit all day. And if you're doing a lot of walking (which we were), choose shoes you can actually move in or pack a pair of slides or crocs to move from location to location. Confidence comes from comfort—nobody wants to be wobbling in heels they can barely walk in.
Sunrise at Folly Beach: Where the Magic Happened
Let's talk about commitment for a second. We stayed overnight in Charleston, and to make it to Folly Beach for sunrise on June 14th, Kaylei probably started getting ready with hair and makeup around 3:30 AM. Yes, you read that right. THREE THIRTY IN THE MORNING. It's not for the faint of heart, but oh my goodness, it was so worth it.
The light at Folly Beach that morning? Absolutely magical. The deep blues of the ocean are so different compared to some of the beaches here in NC—it feels more dramatic, more moody. And the trees and foliage make you feel like you're on an island somewhere tropical. I honestly wish it was closer to home because I'd shoot there all the time.
Effortless
Kaylei started the sunrise session in a white tank and jeans, barefoot in the sand. Sometimes the simplest looks photograph the most beautifully, and this was proof. The casual vibe let the focus stay on the gorgeous morning light and that dreamy beach atmosphere. There's something so authentic about jeans and a tank at sunrise—it feels real and unforced.
This is that "simple and classic" look that never goes out of style. Well-fitting jeans, a solid-colored top, and the confidence to just be yourself? That's the recipe right there.
Outfit Tip: Don't overthink beach sessions. A simple tank or tee with jeans or shorts can be just as stunning as a formal dress. The key is fit—make sure everything fits you well and you feel confident. And go barefoot! Shoes on the beach rarely look natural in photos, and there's something freeing about being barefoot that translates into more relaxed feel.
Soft & Romantic
Next up was a short, flowy dress in tan with white flowers. The movement of the fabric in the ocean breeze, the soft color palette against the sand and surf—this is the kind of look that makes beach sessions feel like something out of a magazine. We shot both down by the water and on some driftwood, and the variety of settings with this one dress was incredible.
Outfit Tip: Flowy, movement-friendly fabrics are essential for beach sessions. Think lightweight cotton, linen, or anything that catches the breeze. The movement adds so much life and energy to your photos. Bonus points if your dress or skirt has a shorter hemline for the beach—you won't have to worry about it getting soaked or sandy.
Sunlit and Salt-Kissed
For the final look, Kaylei changed into a sage green and white floral maxi two-piece skirt set. This outfit brought all the romantic feels—the long skirt, the soft colors, the floral print catching the early morning light.
And can we talk about the coffee and breakfast at Lost Dog Cafe afterward? Life. Giving. After that 3:30 AM wake-up call, we definitely earned it.
