A Journey of Lessons and Beautiful Surprises
There’s something truly magical about photographing portraits in historic Downtown Wilmington, where the historic charm of the past meets the vibrancy of the present. Sidney’s session started there, surrounded by the rich textures and timeless architecture that make this place so special. But in full transparency, this session had its challenges. It unexpectedly taught me one of the most valuable lessons I've learned in my seven years as a photographer.
This isn't the first time I've met with Sydney for her senior portrait session . . .

The first time Sidney and I met for her session, everything was perfection or so I thought. We had a great time exploring the historic downtown and were excited to finish up with some stunning shots by the ocean. It wasn’t until we arrived at the beach that I realized that my camera had not been writing to my SD card during our entire time together. I had never experienced such a loss. All those beautiful moments we captured were non-existent!
I was absolutely devastated. It was a rookie mistake I never thought I would make. The issue? I did something I was always told not to do — I deleted files directly from my camera instead of properly formatting my SD cards. It was a humbling reminder that no matter how experienced you are or how reliable your gear is, mistakes can still happen. I learned the hard way that day, but it’s a lesson I’ll never forget.

However, I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. While the first session was incredible, the second time around was even more magical than I could have imagined.
Returning to the beach with Sidney, the sun glowed differently this time around, and Sidney herself was radiant, confidence and grace in every shot. It was as if the we had been given a second chance to create something even more special.

Looking back, losing those initial photos was heartbreaking, but it led to something incredible.
To all the photographers out there—whether you're just starting out or have been doing this for years—never overlook the basics. Always check, double-check, and then check again. It’s the little things that make the biggest difference. And sometimes, when things don’t go as planned, believe that there could be something even better waiting for you.
I’m so excited to share Sidney’s gallery with you all, and I hope her images bring you as much joy as they did for me to create—twice over.
